I met Amanda and TJ a few months ago during our consultation for their wedding day. We chose to do their engagement shoot in Detroit and here is a short story why.
Amanda and TJ met at a bar over 10 years ago. Thanks to a mutual friend who introduced them to each other that day, they stayed in touch. Shortly after that they started to date. They knew they were a good fit so they started to live together. After some time living together TJ got a job in Toronto, where he was forced to move there. For awhile these two had a long distance relationship. At that time, TJ was living in Toronto and Amanda was trying to figure out if she was going to move there with him or stay in Windsor. The stars aligned and suddenly TJ ended up getting a job in Detroit. Shortly after, he moved back to Windsor and they lived together again. Their long distance relationship made their love even stronger and TJ knew she was a keeper so he planned to propose to her.
He had this idea in his head to customize a book for her with text and pictures of them from the beginning of their relationship until how he planned the proposal. Since they lived together it was tricky to plan everything. He was worried that she is going to find out. He would do it late at night or before she would come home from work. Amanda said he was acting weird from time to time. During the planning he would lie to her, that he was with his friends, but really, he was with the jeweller choosing and engraving the engagement ring for her.
A few nights before the proposal they watched a romantic movie where this guy proposed to his girlfriend in public. Amanda commented how cheesy that was. TJ was starting to get a little worried because his plan was to be outside in public. On the proposal night they went out for dinner. Before they left Amanda couldn’t figure out what to wear. Typical girls problem, right? That made TJ worried. He thought that he was busted and that she knew what he was about to do and he wouldn’t be able to surprise her.
He planned to be early at the restaurant. TJ made sure his friend was there to capture the moment with his cellphone, hiding behind the bush . Amanda still didn’t suspect anything. They sat down next to a fountain and he gave her THE book. As she was flipping through the pages she laughed so much and then she read the last page where it said WILL YOU MARRY ME? That made her cry a bit and she didn’t hesitate at all. She said: “YES!”
TJ’s job in Detroit brought him back home from Toronto. Since then, they’ve been spending lots of time there and that’s why he proposed to her in Detroit.
When I saw Amanda in her dress my jaw dropped. She looked like a real princess and TJ like a prince charming next to her. We started their engagement session at Detroit Institute of Arts. Amanda and TJ were a real troopers as they braved the cold outside DIA. After that we went to the Grand Army of the Republic, Detroit’s very own castle. This beautiful architecture with beautiful big windows are a dream for every photographer. I was blown away. It was a perfect fit for these two. We even climbed all the way up the top of the tower, where Amanda was barefoot. We finished our session at Republic restaurant. After that they took my husband and me to dinner at Lumen Detroit restaurant. It was a perfect day with these two. I’m really looking forward to their September wedding.
